Introduction to Basic Lace Knitting

Experience Level: Beginner

Class Description: You will work with the basic stitches of lace knitting and begin to master the art of knitting decorative open work in fine yarn.

You will learn:
– how to read a chart
– how to turn a chart into written instructions
– how to work basic lace stitches
– how to work with pattern repeats

Bring:
– a circular needle
– 3.25mm to 4.0mm,
– lace weight or fingering weight yarn
– stitch markers sized for your yarn

Class Description: Do these instructions terrify you? “Incorporate the increases into your lace pattern.” “Decrease, continuing to work in (lace) pattern.” Believe it or not you can enjoy shaping lace patterns.

You will learn:
– chart a simple lace pattern.
– work decreases in your lace pattern for neck and armhole shaping.
– add increases along the side of your lace pattern.
– work with double decreases.

Bring:
– 50 – 100g of DK weight yarn in a light colour
– 4.5mm needle (circular or straight), markers, pencil, eraser

– keep records of your projects, needles, stash and patterns

Class Description: Does choosing 2 colours to knit with have to take all day? Let’s take some of the guess work out and simplify the process. Choose a dominant colour and learn tangle-free 2-handed knitting. Make a simple hat and learn as you go. Pattern will be supplied.

– tangle-free 2 handed knitting and dominant colour choice

Experience Level: Basic Machine Knitting Knowledge.

Class Description:
Do you have yarns that generally are too heavy to knit on your gauge of machine, or yarns that you don’t have much of.  Knit Weaving is a great way to prevent rolling of your knitted fabric, and stretching, especially for sideways knit garments. We will be knit weaving a one-of-a-kind scarf.

You will learn:
– the Knit Weaving Technique
– choosing Yarns
– creating your own unique design

Bring:
– 200 to 250 metres of sock, fingering or baby weight yarn for the background “fabric”
– oddments of yarns of any weight and texture, as weaving yarns. (yarn will be available for purchase in class)

Class Description: Dyeing to try to hand-paint your own yarn? This is the place! At the end of the weekend, these beautiful, uniquely you, yarns will be ready for you to take home.

You will learn:
– the types of hand-painted yarns
– how to work with hand-painted yarns
– how make colours work together
– placement techniques for dyeing yarn

Bring:
– an old shirt or apron that you don’t mind getting dye on
– a pair of kitchen gloves to protect your hands

Materials Charge: The charge for yarn is dependent on your choice(s) of yarn. Options include: lace weight, fingering, dk, worsted, aran, bulky weight yarns – all in super wash merino, and pre-knitted sock weight yarn blanks. Some yarns may include silk or cashmere, $16 – $35 per skein.

Advanced Needle Felting

Class Description: Learn how to create more complex designs on felted fabric. With your basic knowledge of needle felting, you will advance to creating a felted picture suitable for framing or enhancing home décor.

You will learn:
– how to lay out a larger design
– how to mix and layer different colours of fibre
– how to connect smaller stencils to form a larger piece

Bring:
– scissors
– pencil
– eraser

Materials cost – $15.00 – includes 12″ x 12″ felting mat, felting needles, one 9″ x 12″ felt rectangle – lots of colour choices and fibre to create your masterpiece – lots of colour choices.

Class Description: Adjust your sweater to fit your unique figure. Skim your curves by learning where to add and where to take away extra fabric. Reduce underarm bulk and make proper fitting sleeves. Trim your waist and create some wiggle room for your hips. Special focus on Top Down Raglan sweaters.

You will learn:
– which measurements really matter
– how to make a waist
– how to make good fitting sleeves
– how to adjust for gauge

Bring:
– tape measure
– any sweater that fits or a sweater that doesn’t fit.
This a discussion class, no needles and yarn needed.

– 4.5mm needles and 5mm needles (double pointed or circular) for shoulder seaming and the smallest needles you own (e.g. 2mm)

An Introduction to Needle Felting

Learn the basics of needle felting on fabric. I like to call it painting with fibre on felt. Using a single felting needle, a felting mat, and a small felt square, you will create this lovely felted flower, in your choice of colours.

You will learn:
– how to use a felting needle
– how to use fibre to create a colour design
– how make your own stencil to create any shape you like from fibre

Is your stash overwhelming you? Do you want to make good use o “less than sweater” quantities of yarn? Then this interactive discussion is for you. Store your stash, keep track of it, and use it to create unique garments and accessories. Knowledgeably combine different fibres to create fabrics in colours and textures that please you. See and learn stitch patterns that make the most of your stash yarns.

– the basic principles of colour theory

Class Description: Give your fingers, hands, back and shoulders a break. An introduction to “another way” to knit, Portuguese Knitting. Portuguese Knitting uses either a knitting pin or your neck to tension the yarn from the ball to your knitting. When knitting this way, there is very little motion of the hands, allowing you to knit for a bit longer. We will be knitting a cup cozy to practice this “new to you” technique.

You will learn
– A new way to hold the yarn and needles, and how to use a knitting pin
– How to combine Portuguese Knitting with your usual way to knit
